미국 50개 주와 수도 DC의 좌우명/모토

한국도 요즘에는 도시마다 도시의 특징을 살리려는 좌우명이나 표어 같은 것이 있다.

서울은 Hi Seoul, 수원은 Happy Suwon 등의 Motto 가 있다.

사람들에게 도시의 친근감이나 도시 이름을 각인 시키기 위한 표어 같은데, 하이서울 페스티벌 등의 행사에서도 이런 표어를 사용하는 것을 볼 수 있다.

하지만 이런 표어 중 다수는 도시의 특징과는 관계 없이 만든 것 같아 아쉬운 면이 없지 않다.

미국도 길게는 400 여년 전(로드 아일랜드), 짧게는 50 여년 전(알라스카 주)부터 이런 좌우명/모토를 정해놓고 사용하고 있다.

미국도 이런 표어를 사회 곳곳에서 사용하고 있는데, 표어만 봐도 그 주가 만들어진 때나, 연방정부에 편입될 당시 그 주 사람들의 인식을 알 수 있다.

예를 들어, 동부 13주의 경우 대다수의 모토가 영국의 식민지에서 벗어난 자유에 대한 갈망을 나타내는 것이다.

특징이라면, 법조계나 행정 쪽에서 라틴어를 많이 사용하는 것이 이어지는 것을 볼 수 있다.
